Full-Time or Part-time: Full-time
Department: Conservation
Reports To: National Director of Field Conservation
Employment Category: Salaried/Exempt

Job Summary:
The primary objective of a Director of Conservation Operations (DCO) is to deliver the NWTF’s mission at the region, state and local level via landscape-scale conservation delivery. This is accomplished by working in partnership with other NWTF staff, NWTF volunteers and chapters, state and federal agencies and corporate partners. The work of the Director of Conservation Operations should result in improved investment of NWTF funds through quality program & project development and selection, along with assisting with the development of funding support. In addition, it is imperative the DCO is familiar with regional conservation priorities and develop a work plan accordingly.
Directors of Conservation Operations supervise district biologists and other staff in their respective regions. They may also supervise term-limited wildlife biologists and foresters as needed. They help develop annual work plans and monitor progress through regular check-ins and annual evaluations for all staff under their direct supervision. The DCO plays an active role in mentoring and training field staff, answering programmatic and procedural questions, and reviewing and analyzing accomplishment reports to ensure each direct report represents the NWTF in a knowledgeable and professional manner. Additionally, the DCO serves as the lead for state policy work within their respective Region and serve to link the Region to the National level on state policy matters.
DCO Position Evolution
The DCO position is evolving to serve a primary geographic region that serves one of the NWTF’s 5 Conservation Initiative Regions (Waterways for Wildlife, Habitat for the Hatch, Forests and Flocks, Roots to Roost and a Western Initiative TBD). The DCO position is being transitioned into a co-leadership position with increased span of control beyond conservation delivery. The DCO will work alongside their corresponding Director of Field Operations to manage and lead a multi-disciplinary team of staff responsible for optimizing mission delivery, communications, membership, and profitability within their designated Initiative Region. This transition is referred to as the NWTF “Hub” concept of organizational function and is in the developmental stages and evolving as each co-led Hub leadership builds their multi-year business plans for their respective Initiative Region. Each DCO will work directly for the National Director of Conservation Programs until the Regional Hub transition implementation date. The DCO positions will ultimately be supervised by the Co-CEOs of the NWTF.
