As a Junior Structural CAD Designer, you will assist in creating design packages primarily for the industrial and mining sectors, applying CAD skills and structural engineering principles to support project execution.
Responsibilities
- Support the design team in project tasks, helping to create structural design packages
- Assist in the preparation of project deliverables
- Track your own tasks to ensure timely completion and help the team meet project milestones
- Use CAD tools (2D/3D) to develop structural design drawings
- Create designs following standard structural drafting practices and ensure clarity and accuracy in drawings
- Assist in interpreting sketches, and field data to prepare technical drawings
- Learn to conduct site visits for measurements, field reviews, and as-built verification
- Help prepare structural quantity takeoffs
- Identify areas where technical improvements or cost-effective solutions can be applied
- Work closely with team members, sharing knowledge and learning from senior designers
- Assist in managing your individual tasks and contribute to team deliverables
- Participate in design reviews and project meetings
- Support communication with clients to understand and clarify technical requirements
- Learn and assist in reviewing structural design deliverables for accuracy and adherence to quality standards
- Help maintain proper documentation and drawings, following internal protocols
- Support the identification and management of potential risks in the structural design process
- Keep up to date with industry trends, design tools, and best practices
- Participate in training and professional development opportunities
- Engage in learning activities and contribute to the team's culture of growth and innovation
Skills
- Diploma Engineering Design & Drafting Technology, Architectural Technology, or a related discipline from an accredited institution
- Minimum 0–4 years of design experience in an industrial or mining environment
- Basic proficiency in AutoCAD for 2D and 3D structural design and drafting
- Ability to interpret structural sketches verbal instructions, and field data to produce accurate technical drawings
- Familiarity with standard structural drafting practices, drawing standards, and documentation requirements
- Basic understanding of structural design and quantity takeoffs
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to drawing accuracy
- Eagerness to learn and receptiveness to feedback and mentorship from senior staff
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for team collaboration
- Exposure to 3D modelling tools such as Autodesk Revit or AutoCAD
- Familiarity with Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) for document management
- Any experience or coursework related to structural or industrial design and drafting
- Basic understanding of structural detailing requirements and constructability considerations for steel and concrete
- Experience or interest in industrial or mining sectors
