Title: Data Scientist, Imaging x AI/ML
Location: Redwood City United States
Job Description:
Biohub is leading the new era of AI-powered biology to cure or prevent disease through its 501c3 medical research organization, with the support of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.
The Team
Biohub is a 501c3 biomedical research organization building the first large-scale initiative to combine frontier AI and frontier biology to solve disease. With our compute capacity, AI research and engineering, and state-of-the-art technology for measuring, imaging, and programming biology, we are enabling scientists worldwide to use AI-powered biology to study how cells operate and organize as systems-ultimately understanding why disease happens and how to cure or prevent it.
Through our multi-dimensional Imaging program, we build imaging tools that capture life across scales - from single proteins to whole organisms - revealing how cells function, communicate, and assemble into living systems. These observations are laying the groundwork for a new generation of AI models that can predict cellular behavior and guide the development of better treatments for widespread diseases. You can learn more about our work here.
Our work brings together three powerhouse universities - Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco - into a single collaborative technology and discovery engine.
Our Vision
Pursue large scientific challenges that cannot be pursued in conventional environments
Enable individual investigators to pursue their riskiest and most innovative ideas
Facilitate research by scientists and clinicians at our home institutions and beyond
We are a team of passionate individuals powered by technology, guided by scientific research, and driven by collaboration, working toward a mission to cure or prevent all disease. Join us.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Data Scientist to join our team in developing AI/ML powered algorithms and software tools for improving and analyzing images acquired using newly developed, state-of-the-art cryogenic block face focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (cryoFIB-SEM) coupled with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and other readout modalities.
This role is ideal for candidates with a strong background in AI/ML, image processing, and a passion for advancing scientific discovery through computational innovation. Applicants with expertise in computational science, applied mathematics, or physics, combined with experience in state-of-the-art ML approaches, are strongly encouraged to apply. We value critical thinking, problem-solving ability, and clear communication in our vibrant, collaborative environment
What You'll Do
Design and implement AI/ML powered algorithms for 3D volumetric image correction, registration and reconstruction followed by segmentation, and analysis in cryogenic FIB-SEM and AFM.
Develop robust, scalable software packages and pipelines for processing large-scale imaging datasets.
Apply and adapt AI/ML techniques, including deep learning, to automate feature detection, denoising, classification, and other tasks.
Collaborate closely with biologists, microscopists, and software engineers to understand research goals and tailor computational solutions.
Prepare technical documentation, user guides, and contribute to scientific publications and presentations.
What You'll Bring
A Ph.D. in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related field.
Strong background in AI/ML and image processing.
Proficiency in programming languages in Python or C++.
Experience with scientific computing libraries and frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, NumPy, SciPy, scikit-image).
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Knowledge of high-performance computing environments and GPU acceleration.
Track record of scientific publications or open-source contributions in relevant fields.
Compensation
The Redwood City, CA base pay range for a new hire in this role is $153,000.00 - $210,100.00. New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range, enabling employee growth in the range over time. Actual placement in range is based on job-related skills and experience, as evaluated throughout the interview process.
Better Together
As we grow, we're excited to strengthen in-person connections and cultivate a collaborative, team-oriented environment. This role is a hybrid position requiring you to be onsite for at least 60% of the working month, approximately 3 days a week, with specific in-office days determined by the team's manager.
